Eugene,

I always seem to be in the middle of reading something when folks ask me
for a suggestion that the article in question MIGHT be relevant for!

I (provisionally) recommend your former student to take a look at the
recent article by Grigorenko & Sternberg in Psychological Bulletin,
entitled Dynamic Testing (1998), vol 124, 75-111.

It includes an interesting, brief critical review of the Vygotskian
operationalization of how to test learning potential, and sets it
alongside several other contemporary approaches. 'Quite thorough, and
rather hard-nosed', are my initial impressions.
