RE: [xmca] AERA 2010 CALL FOR PROPOSALS ­ Cultural-Historical Research SIG

I have been working on developing the 'Partner School Initiative' approach to teacher education at the University of Idaho, Coeur d'Alene campus. In a nutshell, 

Year 1 Spring: we established an agreement with one school and I began by teaching our literacy methods course and a doc student taught our children's lit class in an elementary school where we split the courses between time with our ed students and time with our ed students in classrooms. We (the instructors and the UI preservice educators) taught elementary students based on the needs the teachers/ school expressed (based on high stakes tests, based on a desire for new information, based on just a willingness to try something new). Sometimes we went in and supported new instruction, we made centers, we did tutoring, assessments, whatever the school needed that aligned with our curriculum and service objectives. Learned a lot!!!! Social studies methods were also taught but with an after school program.

Year 2 Fall: New school, taught foundations of literacy. Service learning emphasis on supporting teacher needs. 

Year 2 Spring: Two schools (the two we'd been in - two different districts) teaching literacy methods, children's lit, incorporated art methods service learning projects with literacy. 

Year 2 Summer: Two intro ed courses taught as service learning in a local middle school. 

Year 3 Fall (coming up): A new school, all literacy courses in the school plus an introductory education course, math methods, science methods, social studies methods, art methods. Experiment: on-line reading assessment and intervention course e-service learning.

Our faculty has been receiving training and mini-grants and our goal is an entire elementary education program taught in schools but as service learning (not PDS or demonstration school) where each experience is negotiated.  Secondary ed next. Our main campus in Moscow (IDAHO) will begin service learning with an intro course this fall, but they will not 'reside' in a school. We are focused on becoming members of the community... students end up volunteering for all kinds of things and most will wind up with 1 to 2 years of classroom style service learning experience before they hit student teaching. 

There's more to it.... but I would love to bring this forth if it fits...

Since LCHC has to be in Denver in any event, we might consider a
couple of different

We here at LCHC are REALLY interested in the role of practicum courses
in undergrad education.
We have a couple of abstracts ready to roll. Anyone else interested in
this topic??
