juxtaposition of usually spatially-separated images or pictures by
photographers or film-makers to create tension
between the culturally-expected and possible worlds
(e.g. suburban homes put next to housing developments;
gay families in kitchens and "straight" families in kitchens next to one
another).
Use of Video or audio "playback" to participants of their own activity. This
is part of the action research
tradition that examinesnot reflection in isolation but reflection-in-action,
not espoused theories of practice but practices in use (I'm thinking of _The
Reflective Practitioner_ here by Schon). Here, _time_ or a distance between
two times may serve a critical function in reflection.
Botth these it seems to me open up the perspectival horizon Jay spoke of as
crucial to reflection, and while verbal language may be involved, the
"tricks" of the trade here are doing a lot of the work of creating the
possibilities.
