Harry Daniels is Professor of Special Education and Educational
Psychology at the University of Birmingham, UK. He is editor of
Charting the Agenda: Educational Activity after Vygotsky (1993) and
An introduction to Vygotsky (1996).
His interests lie in the integration of Vygotskian / Activity theory
with accounts of social transmission which make it possible to
conduct empirical studies of socio-institutional effects at the
level of individual thinking and learning. Current projects focus on
the 'gendering of special needs practices', peer collaboration
between teachers, comparison of constructs of deviance held by
teachers and pupils working in different forms of pedagogic practice
in Denmark and England and the study of wall displays in classrooms as
semiotic relays.
His theoretical work also draws on the general model of the the structure
of pedagogic practice developed by Basil Bernstein
