Greetings to old and new members of the xmca distributed community of
discursive practice !
I am recently returned from a sabbatical year in my home country of Zambia,
where I have been starting up a new research project designed to document
the activities of an exemplary program of educational innovation in a very
modestly financed government primary school that caters to a primarily
low-income neighborhood in a small rural town in the Northern Province.
My co-principal investigator, Gertrude Mwape, who is a lecturer at the
University of Zambia, and I have entitled the project "participatory
appropriation of health science and technology" and will be presenting
some preliminary findings at the International conference of the ISSBD in Quebec
this August, in a companion poster session to the symposium that Bame Nsamenang
and I are co-convening on "Basic education for the modern world:
alternatives to Western cultural hegemony" (other presenters will be Wade
Boykin and Giyoo Hatano).

If any new members of XMCA would like additional background information about
my past research on cognitive development and schooling in Zambia
and/or my ongoing longitudinal research in Baltimore on "the emergence of
literacy in sociocultural context," co-directed with Linda Baker and
Susan Sonnenschein, I'll be happy to send my old self-introduction on request.
