This profile marks my return to xmca after a difficult few months in =
my life. Indeed it marks something of a rebirth after a long struggle =
with depression. Consistent with a rebirth comes things new including =
for me a new electronic mail address listed at the bottom of this =
message.
Below I've summarized some of aspects of myself and my experiences =
with xmca/xlchc. There should be html version of this information on =
the xmca web page shortly - I hope!
Thanks to all for your support!

HISTORY WITH XMCA/XLCHC
I discovered xlchc (as it was called then) about 1988. I "arrived" =
and became what Eugene Matusov has called a "young rebel." I was new =
to discussion groups and electronic and found the computer =
"uninhibiting" comparing to my normal shyness in face-to face =
interactions. As a result, I made a "reputation" for myself! :-) =
Fortunately, I had enough good ideas mixed in with my brash messages =
to make a contribution, and I learned much about the field and felt I =
had a home - at time when situated cognition remained an underground =
moment.
Over the years I have "matured" (i.e., grown old :-) My rhetoric has =
grown more timid (if my ideas have not!) I've also fallen victim to =
the crowding of time syndrome. I am less able to keep up with the sea =
of correspondence that is generated on xmca. I hope to rededicate =
myself to this forum and again live up to my rebellious reputation! =
(if with a bit more professional reserve and tact! :-)
PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS
I am interested in advancing post-modernist perspectives on =
philosophy and
the human sciences and sharing those perspectives with others. My =
research
interests are to examine and explain learning and developmental =
processes
that occur in the workplace, emerging computer-based media, adult =
life, and
the broader context of schooling. My teaching interests include: =
technology,
learning and development, research methods, and critical perspectives =
on
education, societal change, human identity, and social sciences. My
theoretical perspective is based on the dialectical assumption that =
agents
and the lived world are mutually constitutive of each other and that
learning, social interactions, individual identity are shaped by =
cultural,
historical, and material relations. Of particular concern to me are =
the
learning processes and identity formation of people in the margins of
society, and working toward a more open, understanding, and =
enlightened
world populace.
PRIMARY INSPIRATION
I am the product of the socio-cultural/situated learning school of =
Educational/Cognitive theory. The strongest influence in my work is =
the _Situated Learning: Legitimate Peripheral Participation_ book. I =
have also been strongly influenced by aspects of Activity theory and =
Vygotsky's Cultural-Historical method.
