There is the old context of the eXtended LCHC that has given
me a curious kind of identity as an old-timer in electronic
discussions -- until the xlchc was shut down last year, I had
the Xperience of ten years or so. Since the I-word-craze has
hit Germany hard, everybody here suddenly listens to my stories
about the possibilities of the Internetter's spawning virtual
communities.
But another context, quite new, quite different, tells me
that this is utopian even if there are examples pointing to
the contrary. I am in the consulting business these days,
away from academia to an extent where the German brand of it
seems just ridiculous. No community of scholars at all.
Nothing gets done for the sake of general ideals, everything
seems to be a consequence of particular interests. The
difference to the world of money is just pure make-believe.
The third I wants to listen to what is said on the extended
MCA these days, and surely will also utter some stranger's
remarks, and will see what happens.
The sientific work of mine is concerned with understanding
how it is possible, and why it is so hard, that people
cooperate across cultural boundaries of the more modest
type, e.g. between professions in the same region of Europe.
