Kathryn Crawford is currently director of a research unit at the University
of Sydney which focuses on issues concerning the impact of new information
technologies, and computer-based learning environments in particular, on
learning. She has conducted research investigating the
relationships between the social setting, culture and cognitive processes
used in problem solving in mathematics, science and in adult work places.
Her work with traditionally oriented aboriginal people suggests that to the
extent that curriculum materials such as elementary mathematics reflect
the interests, priorities, categories and activities of particular cultures
they are less accessible to people from cultures which do not share the
same world view or the same life experiences. Her particular interest is
in the impact of new visual representations of complex data on human
thinking and learning and the ways in which new information technologies
shape and are shaped by human activity.
