At this point my sense is that "having an understanding of something"
cannot mean that one knows a little piece of what "is." Instead it means
that a person has what is to them a satisfying explanatory scheme for that
thing that fits within the context of their experiences (including
interactions with other people) and needs.
My undergrad work was in physics at Case Institute of Technology ('69) and
my graduate work was in condensed matter physics at The University of Texas
at Austin ('78). Before entering graduate school I taught high school
physics and jr high physical science. I have taught in an inner city high
school and a rural jr/sr high, as well as, at the university level at
Oklahoma State and at Boise State.
Participation on this list over the last several years has been rewarding
to me because of the opportunities to be exposed to the ideas of others
from different view points and because of the constructive way that members
of the list usually handle differences.
