I am a psychoeducational consultant with the Toronto Board of Education.
My professional responsibilities include working with deaf and hard of
hearing children, their parents, and their teachers, to maximise their
learning, whether in the mainstream or in special educational settings.
Prior to this, I was a professor of Special Education, training teachers
of deaf and hard of hearing children. My research interests lie in the
domains of language and cognition, and particularly in the effects of
delayed, interrupted, ineffectual language acquisition situations on
cognition. (I include literacy in "language acquisition".) I am also
interested in the relationship between signed forms of language (e.g.
American Sign Language), and bilingualism with English in its various
forms (spoken, signed, written). My work in particularly informed by
Vygotsky, Bakhtin, Wertsch, Moll, John-Steiner, El-konin...that bunch.
