Hi Haydi,
I doubt very much that you will learn from me - I'm very confused in this area!
Certainly, Marx's theses on Feuerbach were an important step forward towards a new ontology: materialist, social, with an emphasis on practice.
Then, Marx's treatment of value in Capital provides a fascinating example of a detailed analysis carried out on the basis of such an ontology. Marx shows the origins of value in productive labor, and the way that the value of a commodity amounts to an ideal aspect of that material entity. He showed that we can think of value as neither subjective nor Platonic - it is a property of produced entities as they move in cycles of production and exchange.
We've discussed a few years ago on xmca the way that Ilyenkov sought to extend this kind of analysis from value to all the 'ideals' of a society - to show that they too are intersubjective. He too argues that it is when artifacts are placed in motion by human activity that they acquire an ideal aspect.
I think, though, that Maidansky takes a step too far in arguing that concepts are universal and general. After all, Marx's analysis included the concepts whereby economic activity was understood in his time. He showed that these economic concepts had a history in which it was important to place them in order to understand them. And he showed that there is a historical process of abstraction in which concepts appear to leave behind their concrete circumstances.
On the other hand, if Marx wrote the last word we wouldn't need to read Vygotsky! And we know that in Crisis, LSV was very critical of those psychologists of his time who simply applied Capital directly to psychology. For example, the ontological claim that a person is an ensemble of social relations may be fine as a first statement of an ontological principle, but it leaves a lot of details to be spelled out. Do we really mean to say that a person "is" this? Or do we mean to say that each person is "constituted" by and in social relationships? I would say the latter, but in this case the work remains of describing the processes (biological/psychological/cultural) in which this constitution occurs.
