Sure, sure. There is not disagreement...
Unhappily in Portuguese there is only one word to unity and unit... then we have many problems in translate Vygotsky, because many times he is talking about "consciouness unity", and some times about "units of consciousness". I only discover this very recently... Then I did not check in English, but of course you will have no problem with this matter. I forget.
Well, yes "unit can not be further decomposed without lost the whole characteristics" is what I was trying to say. But "elements" in Vygotsky discussion are not only the result of decomposition of units (molecules) in its parts (atoms)... Even a "complex unity" ("molar" one?) can be decomposed into "simple units" OR into "elements"... Elements stay not only at the "third degree" of division of a whole... Vygotsky talk about the "complex unity" decomposed into "simple units"... Maybe I can give a sample. It is that, at another place, a psychological process as "attention" is not viewed not as a "unit" for consciousness but as an "element"... etc. (again "The crisis of seven years"). This element demand other elements to compose a consciousness unit... But "perezhivanie" is a true dynamic unit of consciousness... (The crisis of seven years) - what we can understand as the statement that within a perezhivanie there are all the necessary elements integrated for a conscious process. Then this concept of "element" in the case of a relatively complex process as "attention" seems to be not so "atomic", as well... I guess Vygotsky was not so concerned in use words ever exactly in the same meaning (something, of course, very difficult to be done at any human discursive act), but he deals with metaphors... Of course, this do not means that there is not present a general approach implied in the molecule metaphor... A molecule can be decomposed, yes. But not without lost the whole properties... Even so, some things that maybe could be viewed "ontologically" as "molecular" as an attentional process, methodologically is not an unit, but an element of consciousness - therefore the analogy can not be taken in a much strict sense.
