A very interesting post. I think Gumperz referred to at least some of things
you are referring to as "pre-textual misunderstanings" as *contextualization
cues*. Hymes also handled this sort of thing in some of his terminology, i
think. Don't see their work surface in the CHAT context too often so I
thought I would throw that out there.
