i remember in one of my first doctoral courses that the professor spent
some time explaining such things.
i squirmed and struggled in writing papers for that course, trying to put
into writing the emphases or cues or markers that give the spoken language
so much texture.

once i encountered the idea that language is not transparent, nor neutral,
i felt such relief.

i can make a face when i say "you have to write this following APA
guidelines," which will tell my audience that i wish they didn't.
but that's much more difficult to do in writing.

what's deemed inappropriate seems to me to be a good place to look for
normalizing and exclusionary practices.
