I found both of your messages about Bernstein helpful to my
thinking. My intuitions fit with Jay's-- weaken framing and classification.
But is there any empirical research on this topic? Harry's very interesting
research amply demonstrates that there are important within-class/between
school variations in both framing and classification, but, Harry, has
there been any work that systematically looks at the impact of such
changes as a function of social class/culture in the UK or elsewhere?
I sort of expected that our colleagues in Australia might have
info on this topic, but I gather not.
