transcribing convetions

Is there anyone out there, perhaps someone with a speech communications
background, who is familiar with the conventions used for transcribing
videotaped discussions? My fellow research team members and I are having a
difficult time settling on what such symbols as // (interuption) and :
(simultaneous speech) truly mean, along with the other conventions
typically used. Is there a bible for discourse analysis that might have a
guide for such technical issues, to at least give us a place to argue from?
I realize each researcher or research team needs to fine-tune such things
for their own purposes, but isn't there some prescribed set of conventions
used for publication purposes at least?

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
