Hi Martin, Hi all, Reading your message, I thought right away of
Geertz that someone has mentioned in response. In particular an
essay called The interpretation of cultures where thick
descriptions of phenomena is described as interpretive method.
Personally, I love that kind of analysis, but it seems that when a
combination of interpretive methods are used, there is more of a
chance that the work will fly (past what it needs to such as
review boards and committees!). I am hoping though that you will
say this is quite wrong and that there are many groups that find
thick descriptions convincing in and of themselves.
I agree with most of what is being said about theory, and would
like to add that for me it is also finding, making sense of the
semiotic interior, as Arne Raeithel wrote. And when the picture
that is painted is indeed acurate, I think that it is like a
mirror for participants, and that it certainly enters the practice
(phenomena in question) to change it.
Yes, I really agree.
