Yes, different devices are needed and knowledge almost certainly means
different things at different "depths of focus". Whilst maintaining these
distinctions, it can also be useful to have ways of comparing the two, to
see how the two interrelate. This is where the weather/climate,
system/instance metaphors are useful. Ruqaiya Hasan in a recent article
puts this as seeing "the invariants behind the variants"; that you need
both "langue" and "parole" together.
