Glad that Kathleen Falconer recalled sensing in her own
experience some of the contradictions that worry me about
our transmissionary values in education. In the case she
describes, the professor was doubtless out to transmit his
values, but to maximize transmission requires a practice
(restricting freedom unnecessarily except for this control)
that is not consistent with the theory.

I had the same problem with my own students every time
I spent more than two weeks discussing _Pedagogy of the Oppressed_.
Once the students got the message, they started to challenge
the medium (mine -- I suppose one could accuse Freire of a
rather monologic rhetoric in the book, though not so in his
more personal dialogic practice). JAY.
