I can't help responding to messages like Peter's by asking - if you don't
see yourself responding to ethnic, class, racial stereotypes rather than
knowledge of the realities of schools and classrooms- . Do you also believe
that because machismo is part of some cultures that abusive fathers and husbandsare also a good idea?

What bothers me the most is that highly effective teachers are being
discouraged from teaching poor and ethnically different kids. Do we really
want to resegregate society? Are we ready to go so far as to say that races
learn differently, that poor kids need discipline but rich kids need
creative teachers. That some kids handle the stimulating curriculum that '
others thrive in.
I hope Mike Rose's Possible Lives will open your eyes to the realaties of
what knowledgable and caring teachers are making possible ofr kids of all
kinds.
