I'm looking for people in the New York City area who might be
interested in working with me part-time in a course in methods of
science teaching in secondary education.
The course will be based at CUNY's Brooklyn College School of
Education. There will be a weekly seminar on Tuesday afternoons
(approx 3:30 to 6pm, though times will be a bit flexible), and
there will be about 15 pre-service interns (student teachers) in
schools near the college whom we will visit and observe in their
classrooms. About 6-7 of them are experienced scientists or
science educators from the former USSR, who are planning to teach
in the U.S. They are relatively recent arrivals, still adjusting
to the new language and culture, but with adequate to good
communication skills.
We need someone who could join in this project for the equivalent
of about one half-day per week, or 45 hours for the term (at a
remuneration rate of about $50 per hour, with an adjunct faculty
appointment). Times for visiting in the participating schools
would be flexible, during normal school hours. Participation in
the seminar is welcome, but only one or two seminars for the term
are needed since I will be leading most of the others.
Responsibilities would mainly focus on mentoring the interns and
reporting on their needs and progress. Research agendas in
connection with the program are also welcome, e.g. collecting
data on any aspect of this work (with permission of the
participants, of course).
Anyone from senior scholars to doctoral students or experienced
or retired science teachers would be welcome.
If you are interested, have further questions, or would like to
recommend someone, please contact me by email at:

or by phone (leave message) at 914-738-6332.
(This is a personal invitation, not an official position
announcement by the University.)
