Karin-- There are some good applied linguists on this list and the issue
of role of mother tongue and context of acquisition seem like perfectly
suitable topics for study in a chat framework. Its summer here, so who
knows who can contribute. But a google search in xmca on "language" or
"first language" might turn up some pointers.
I have always admired the early work of A.A. Leontiev on activity and
second language acquisition.
