mike,

I think that the hold of "white males" in academia is probably the weakest
of any institution in the country. But there can be no doubt that we are in
a peiod when white males are exerting their specific white male idiocy to
the max throughout the society. Case in point: the TV producer, Michael
Moore of TV America, wrote a book called "Stupid White Males" that was all
set to be published by Harper-Row (i think) about the week after 9-11. It's
release was held up which was understandable. But later, since the book
really attacks W and his administration (prototypical white males: Ashcroft,
Rumseld), Harper Row was about to cancel it's release even though 50,000
copies had been printed. You can read all about this on Michael Moore's
website.

The issue that bugs me is: why don't we see a more concerted attack on the
"white males" who really fit that category, rather than aleatory attacks on
individuals who happen to also be "white" and male (probably i should use
quotations on this word too!) but who really don't pursue or attempt to
maintain the privileges historically associated with that category? It
seems that its easiest to shoot the people closest to you but it's not at
all clear that this kind of behavior leads to the best outcome.

Paul H. Dillon.
