Dear Jay,
I would like to recommend Barker and Wright Stream of Behavior, includingm
immodestly the Soskin and John article. Some people like Fillmore consider
these studies is classic forerunners of sociolinguistic-discourse
analyses.
(And on a more personal note, I am getting some references for your math
and aethetics question ready.)
