Re: [xmca] What gets noticed at AERA



Hi Peter,
If you want to get good electronic coverage, I recommend the following two-pronged approach:
1. Recruit Eager Graduate Students to record, document, and circulate updates from the conference; and
2. Offer tiny financial awards for student volunteers, who are always willing to do almost anything to ease the financial hardship of traveling to an expensive conference like AERA.


I am currently in a session called "Learning to Listen and Listening to Learn: Bonding In/difference Across Academic Activisms." This is the first presentation that's co-sponsored by the Queer Studies and Post-Colonial Studies SIG, and it's the first so far among those that I've attended that began with a recognition of being a guest on indigenous land. Many of us received by email the suggestion to do so:

"Of particular note for presenters is the suggestion that: "Among many Indigenous peoples, appropriate protocol involves recognizing the peoples and land upon which a gathering takes place before speaking publicly." This is not difficult to do and can be semiotically and politically powerful,  if significant numbers of indigenous and non-indigenous persons make of practice of doing this (and not just in BC.)"
