---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peter A. Ornstein <pao@unc.edu> Date: Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 8:19 PM Subject: [COGDEVSOC] Senior Position: Center for Developmental Science; UNC To: cogdevsoc@virginia.edu *Professor of Psychology;* *Director, Center for Developmental Science* The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) seeks an eminent developmental scientist to serve as a tenured full professor in the Department of Psychology and to direct the Center for Developmental Science (CDS). Founded in 1921, the Department of Psychology is composed of 44 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members, and a comparable number of psychologists who are affiliated with the Department on the basis of adjunct, clinical, or research appointments. The Department offers one of the most popular undergraduate majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as opportunities for graduate study in behavioral neuroscience, clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, quantitative psychology, and social psychology. Graduate training reaches beyond the boundaries of the Department, as most members of the faculty are affiliated with interdisciplinary centers on campus, such as CDS (see http://www.cds.unc.edu/index.htm). Building on the interdisciplinary Carolina Consortium on Human Development that was founded in 1987 by Robert B. Cairns (Psychology) and Glen H. Elder, Jr. (Sociology), the CDS was established in 1994 as an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional advanced study center. The Center’s mandate is to foster basic research on behavioral development, translate this work into effective services for children and youth, and provide strong pre- and post-doctoral training programs. The Center brings together more than 90 faculty members from six universities in central North Carolina and many disciplines: anthropology, behavioral genetics, education, behavioral neurobiology, nursing, pediatrics, psychology (including clinical, cognitive, developmental, and quantitative psychology, as well as developmental psychobiology), psychiatry, public health, social work, and sociology. The Director of CDS provides leadership for its research and training programs and for collaboration among its affiliated faculty members, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scientists. He or she is responsible for establishing and maintaining effective alliances with individuals, programs, and institutions that are engaged in cutting-edge developmental research, and for creating and maintaining funded programs of collaborative interdisciplinary and cross-institutional research. The Director also provides leadership for the training program and other activities of the Carolina Consortium on Human Development. He or she is assisted by an executive committee of Center faculty and by a scientific advisory board. The directorship is a secondary “at-will” administrative appointment reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Initiatives in the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. We welcome applications from senior researchers in all areas of developmental science. The successful candidate should share the faculty’s commitment to an interdisciplinary developmental science and have a distinguished record of research, grant support, teaching, and program development. He or she also should demonstrate the ability to provide administrative and supervisory oversight. The University, Department of Psychology, and CDS have strong commitments to the principle of diversity, and we specifically invite and encourage applications from women and members of ethnic and racial minority groups. Each applicant should submit a curriculum vitae (with the names of four references, along with contact information), a personal statement, as well as relevant reprints and preprints. To apply, go http://jobs.unc.edu/2500530. Nominations and inquiries may be addressed to Dr. Peter A. Ornstein, CDS Director Search Committee Chair, c/o Ms. Debbie Stevenson, 104 South Building, CB# 3000, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3000, or debbie_stevenson@unc.edu. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity employer. Peter A.
