[xmca] Expanding or Exploding?

I have a SHORT question about this word in Russian.

My dictionary says that it means "decomposition" but it can also mean "expanding". Can it also mean "exploding"? When Vygotsky talks abotu "decomposing" unified psychological formations into component elements (e.g. Minick p. 44) can we translate him as "exploding" the unified psychological formation and thus destroying the units of analysis we need to uncover? Or is that too metaphorical a reading?

Мы привели этот пример только для того, чтобы показать, как, разложив речевое мышление как известное единое психологическое образование на составные элементы, (...)  Но их слабость заключается в том, что сама постановка этой проблемы является наперед неверной и исключает всякую возможность правильного решения вопроса, ибо применяемый ими метод разложения этого единого целого на отдельные элементы делает невозможным изучение внутренних отношений между мыслью и словом.
