A couple of points seemed to stand out in Goody...
Although Goody indicates that incidences of conflict
often go down after initial male violence, it still
strikes me as interesting that even in "pre-literate"
societies, the notion of complete female
submissiveness isn't assumed. The presence of fear
and the need for violence demonstrates that
contestation remains between males and females
concerning power in the community.
Can hope emerge if we consider that controlling women
through violence and ideology is really a "messy
business"? What are the competing discourses that
create spaces where females can misbehave?
