Hey folks, just a brief blurb on how the Human Dev. - socio-cultural
conference went in Havana a couple of weeks ago...
The Biennial Hominis Conference on Human Development on 11/3- 11-9
went well and was fairly well attended internationally. The opening
feature F. Munne Barcelona on Globalization and psychology but most of
the sessions were CHAT in nature, with a few empirical studies.
Joe Glick spoke re. tensions between the scientific and humanistic
agendas which went over extremely well, so much that I did not get my
audience for another half hour after the scheduled time (re. closing
the ach. gap).
Functional units for psych. analyses were discussed and argued to have
been expanded on rather unevenly after LSV's concern for fofe
experience. Seth Chaklin challenged the audience 's concept of ZPD with
a new proposal.
Pedraza and the Hunter College crew presented their community work.
Cubans focused on a variety of themes including work with special
education, teacher education and counseling work in community centers.
Other highlites included the Havana Yatch Club reception, and one of
our U.S. presenters getting to meet , shake hands and be photgraphed
with Fidel and Spielberg as those two spent 48hrs around town.
Wanda Rodriguez, the new president of SIP (APA Psychological
Interamerican Society) vowed to reach out and invite our CHAT SIG to
Peru, (2003) on their next event.
Joining chatters in Sevilla for ISCAR was also discussed for the
following year...etc
They also have plans for Hominis 2004. A CD with most of the
presentations was made available. Of particular interest was the more
open discussion about the issue of having achieved a high level of
literacy, an educated population without the social conditions to meet
the rising expectations which was somewhat unexpected to hear. Although
i cannot comment on R. Duran's session per se, he was able to capture
also some interesting variations from the traditional discourses heard
there before (among Cubans psychologists trained by LSV's students) The
jazz was very good at nite etc, perhaps some of the others who
participated might add more....
Judy, when you can, can you do a blurb on what's up in Chicago etc.
with the themes..?
Thanks
pedro
