I'm a doctoral student (applied linguistics) at Macquarie University in
Sydney. Worked teaching ESL in Sydney high schools for six years, then
took off and taught English in Japan for nine years. Am researching
collaborative learning in an innovative curriculum by (Japanese) 'false
beginners' of English, using a frame of the curriculum-as-ecology
(Bateson); interpreted through Activity Theory and CA/Functional (Halliday)
Linguistics. Beyond my immediate concerns, I am generally interested in
philosophical implications of approaches to researching educational
linguistics: positivism v pomo.
I usually lurk like some old spider on a web, out there in cyberspace, and
regard xmca as part extensive reading/part fun. I joined up in March and
until then thought that I had a fair grip on CHAT...an opinion I have since
radically revised. The detailed discussion on Vygotsky/Piaget earlier this
year was especially useful for me, while I have also enjoyed 'peripheral
participation' in less familiar areas.
