A few researchers are using concepts from Lacan to deal with these issues.
Two sources would be Walkerdine, V. (1988). The mastery of reason. London:
Routledge. She has chapter entitled "Pleasure and the mastery of reason".
Also her chapter in the Situated Cognition book (1997) edited by
Kirschner & Whitson, Erlbaum. And then there's Litowitz's chapter in the
Contexts for learning book that I edited with Minick and Stone (1993).
Oxford University Press. They both deal with issues such as desire and
identification. I think Jackie Goodnow's work on the socialization of
cognition is also relevant. She deals with issues such as resistance (also
something Litowitz addresses). I would look at her chapter in the Cultural
Psychology book (1990), edited by Stigler, Shweder & Herdt. Cambridge
University Press.

I guess my question to you, Mike, is: How are you imagining "emotion"? In
terms of attachment, bonding, identification; in terms of unconscious and
conscious desires; in terms of resistance?? Depending upon your theory of
emotions and depending upon your theory of cognition--the relationship
could look very different.
