The most recent publication is Birch, S. H., & Ladd, G. W. (1997). The
teacher-child relationship and children's early school adjustment. Journal
of School Psych., 35(1), 61-79.
They address school achievement to some degree, but obviously from the
title you can tell that's not their main focus. You also might look at:

Birch and Ladd (1996) in the book Social Motivation, edited by Jaana
Juvonen and Kathryn Wentzel.
