One problem with considering "boundary object" from a CHAT perspective is
terminological. It becomes difficult to separate the object of activity from
the term object as in "boundary object." I have found Leigh Star's notion
of boundary object useful in considering complex mediating artifacts, e.g.
the Fifth Dimension model, which allow diverse community members to
work collectively toward a shared object while pursuing different or differently
articulated goals. In this sense, a boundary object is akin to Hutchins'
notion of a coordinating artifact.
