I also have always been bothered by Gilligan's strictly gendered
analysis of girls' abdication of desire. De Certeau (_The
Practice of Everyday Life_) shows how such "abdication" may be
tactical, often a creative appropriation of available goods.
A mix of pragmatism (not to be confused with ethics) and, perhaps,
an abstract meta-ethical principle (the sort that, if hugged
tightly enough, can be made to dance).
