In further response to Ellice's query, I think that some of the
work of Stanton Wortham is probably relevant, so perhaps are some
of the comments and examples on 'meta-discourse' in _Talking Science_,
and (not classroom discourse) perhaps the work of Terry Threadgold
(now English Dept, U of Melbourne) and Paul Thibault (now English &
Germanic Studies, U of Venice) on heteroglossia in literary, and
some other genres of written text. My own new work on evaluative
orientations and heteroglossia in newspaper editorials (radio
talk-back next, and maybe classroom discourse later this year)
will be relevant, I hope, and is prefigured in chaps 3 and 4 of
_Textual Politics_. I can also pass the query on to some core
Bakhtinians and see what else turns up. JAY.
