Bill, your comments on groups outside of school resembling degrees of
apprenticeship reminded me of a talk that Shirley Brice Heath gave last
Fall in Boulder regarding her last five (seven?) (ten?) years of
research, which was specifically about community learning practices
outside of school. She commented that all of the sites of community
learning employed multiple degrees of apprenticeship, as well as oral
modeling - the apprentices would be _talked_ through their practice in
addition to the physical practice. Marked degrees of community practice
were established, and if one didn't conform to the community practice
then one was excluded.
I have been watching for text to appear on her present work - it involves
multiple communities across the U.S., including rural, urban, suburban
and inner city.
Perhaps someone else could add to this.
