I am deeply interested in your comment on the interrelation of terms
reflection and metacognition. In Russian tradition we use
metacognition as a more narrow term, a subclass of reflection
covering only the cognitive part of reflective processes. From this
point of view, the elementary school age is treated as the most
critical point of metacognitive development. That does not exclude
the reflective development in early and middle childhood including,
primarily, reflection on one's feelings, motives, goals and
interpersonal relationships. Certainly, the peak of reflective
development in this sphere is found in adolescence.
I wonder whether the American usage of the terms reflection and
metacognition is somewhat different. Can you please indicate some
literature discussing the interrelations of these notions?
