Jay,
I am responding to your note to David. In my limited work with
mathematicians it seems to me that your generalizations hold about the
discipline but that there are styles and phases during which
set-systemetic/typological approaches are dominant (the Bourbaki) and
other phases where more geometrically motivated approaches/topological
(see Osserman quote in my MCA article) approaches become part of the
mainstream. Also, that there are important variations between people
in mathematical subfields. (sorry for this delayed response.)
