Angel:
Regarding refs for critical and sociocultural perspectives on
sla/esl/tesl, you might try looking at the work of Jim Lantolf, Rick
Donato, and Frank Brooks (the latter 2 who deal with FLs other than
English) all of whom take a Vygotskyan approach in their research on
additional language acquisition in the classroom. A special issue of
Modern Language Journal (summer or fall of 94, I think) is devoted to
precisely this and features pieces by the 3 mentioned above as well as
others. In addition, Schinke-Llano has written a reflective piece on
how Vygotsky's work might apply to SLA (sorry, I don't have my resources
at hand and can't recall the exact title or journal it's published in.
Maybe you can try searching for it in ERIC and I'll look for it when I'm
in my office). Too, I have published 2 pieces that are concerned with
this. In one I attempt to connect some of Vygotsky's work to SLA (the
93 ms.) and in the other (the 95 ms.) I try to show the relevance that
Bakhtin's work has to our understanding of both first and second
language use. The mss. are:

(1995). (Re)creating our world with words: A sociohistorical perspective
of face-to-face interaction. Applied Linguistics 16(2): 206-232.

(1993). The role of oral practices in the accomplishment of our everyday
lives: The sociocultural dimension of interaction with implications for
the learning of another language. Applied Linguistics. 14(2):145-166

Finally, if you haven't already, you might look at Catherine Snow's
research which examines the connections between first and second
language acquisition. Although she doesn't explicitly use Vygotsky to
frame her findings, one can use a sociocultural perspective to more
deeply understand and expand upon her work.

Hope this helps.
