One can observe similar practice in Russian schools. There is a typical dialog
between teacher and student:
T.: Did you understand that?
S.: Yes, I did.
T.: Could you explain me WHAT did you understand?
Quite often teachers ask student who did something bad: Why did you do it?
One can see that students usually can not give any answer for such a question.
However we have to work with such situations. And the question is: do our
students have any mediating means.
