ABSTRACTS INVITED FOR

SYMPOSIUM ON
CURRENT ISSUES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS IN THE STUDY OF LANGUAGE POLICY
AND PLANNING

11TH WORLD CONGRESS OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS,
4-9 AUGUST, 1996,
JYVASKYLA, FINLAND.

Abstracts are invited from people enrolled in doctoral studies who
would like to participate in the above Symposium. The Symposium
aims to bring a wide range of interests and expertise into a
focussed and sustained consideration of the issues and problems
currently facing the study of language policy and planning.

The Symposium will run for an afternoon and the whole of the
following day. The first afternoon will consist of invited papers
and discussion. On the following morning, two case studies will be
presented and discussed.The second afternoon will be
devoted to reactions by previous speakers to the proceedings so far and open
discussion from the floor. The format is designed to promote
maximal interaction, intensive discussion and continuity.

The organisers have set aside the morning case study segment for
presentations by doctoral students. This notice invites abstracts
for this part of the program. Two case studies will be selected.

Case studies may deal with particular situations, issues, regions
and/or approaches to the study of language planning and policy.
Each case study will consist of a 30 minute paper, followed by
reactions from two discussants (10 minutes x 2) and open discussion
from the floor (25 minutes).

Abstracts should consist of:

1. A 50-word typed single-spaced description of the proposed paper.
(In the upper left-hand corner, place the proposer's name, address,
phone and fax number, e-mail address, and institutional
affiliation).

2. A 300-word typed double-spaced abstract. (The abstract should be
headed by the proposer's name and the title of the paper).

Two abstracts will be chosen by a small committee nominated by the
Symposium organisers. (The organisers are Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, Robert
Phillipson, Elana Shohamy, Bernard Spolsky and a group of OISE students,
headed by Prof. Normand Labrie).

The following evaluation criteria will be
used:

* potential of the case study to contribute to consideration of a
diverse range of situations/regions/approaches/issues from
different parts of the world;

* quality of proposal.

The successful applicants will be expected to assist in the running
of the Symposium.

No financial assistance to attend the conference is available from
the organising committee itself, although an official invitation will
be sent to the successful applicants and support for applications
for financial assistance will be given.

Abstracts should be sent in two formats:

Closing date for submission of abstracts: 5 pm, October 30th, 1995.
Late applications will not be considered.

Final drafts of papers must be completed by 30th April, 1996.
