Hi everyone.
My name is Karen Hume. I currently teach 37 Grade 8 students in a town
about 25 miles east of Metro Toronto. I switch grade levels pretty often
so, in my ten years of teaching, I've worked with all grades, 1-8, and
have been a teacher-librarian.
I finished my M.Ed. last spring, and started my doctorate in the fall -
on a part time basis. I have done, and continue to do, a lot of work
with Gordon Wells, through courses and through our joint participation in
a teacher research group. I'm influenced by many other theorists as
well. A few who immediately come to mind are Lave and Wenger, and
Bereiter and Scardamalia.
For the sake of introduction, I can cram my current passions in education
into three general areas:
1) The development of the classroom as a knowledge building community.
What tools, what sorts of questions and inquiries are necessary to
support this? What is the role of progressive discourse, and how do you
encourage it?
2) Classroom culture - including the impact of collaboration and peer
teaching, the implications of shared goals, and the significance of
product development on student involvement.
3) Teacher Research Groups - the significance of professional reading and
writing to the development of such groups, questions of time and support
within the restrictive framework of most schools, and the impact of
participation in a teacher research group on classroom practice.
Looking forward to the conversations.
