Buffalo. My dissertation is in the area of semantics/pragmatics. Because
I take a phenomenological view of language meaning, I am doing interviews
with a variety of Americans for the purpose of building an empircal data
base for my study. I am asking my respondents' about their
interpretations of various texts in order to characterize their individual
meaning attribution patterns. In my analysis, I plan to compare the
interpretive schemata to each other. My main advisor is Dr. Madeleine
Mathiot, whose Self-Disclosure Technique I am employing in the interviews.
Dr. Dennis Tedlock, another member of my dissertation committee, has led
me to Paul Ricoeur's "Conflict of Interpretations". I see the
multiplicity of interpretations of language as a factor that must be dealt
with in a realistic theory of the meaning of language.
