I am a doctoral candidate at the UCLA Graduate School of Education where I
work for Dr. Kris Gutierrez as a research assistant. I am interested in
studying problem solving in general and problem solving in mathematics
education in particular as a means of investigating learning and
development. Additionally, I have examined how children are socialized into
planning during science instruction and how narratives are used in
mathematics, science, and literacy problem-solving events. My theoretical
frame grows primarily out of sociocultural theory (e.g., Cole, Rogoff,
Wertsch, Lave, Saxe, Engestrom). However, I use an interdisciplinary
approach that is informed by research and conclusions in language
socialization (e.g., Ochs), Giddens social theory, American Pragmatics
(e.g., Dewey), situated cognition (e.g., Suchman; Winograd), and linguistic
anthropology (e.g., Goodwin & Duranti). Since I am interested in the
situated practices of problem solving, I look at reasoning that occurs
during social interaction. This leads me to methodologies that include
discourse/conversation analysis (e.g., Levinson), ethnography,
proxemic/kinesic text analysis, and video analysis. In the near future, I
hope to continue my research as a formal member of a research institution.
As a side endeavor, I am a program evaluator for university and
elementary/middle school programs.
