I'm a longtime xlchc-er, but haven't been on the list because of
generalized busyness this fall (is that a topic we should follow up on?).
I teach at the U. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, here in the flattest
place on earth. I'm in the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science, and the Women's Studies Program. I teach qualitative methods,
including a new class, ethnography of information systems; sociology of
science, technology and information systems; and gender and science. My
intellectual heritage is symbolic interactionism, heavily flavored with
Latourian sociology of science and Adrienne Rich's poetry and essays. I
help edit Mind, Culture and Activity, and try to build bridges between
designers of large scale information systems and those who use them, via
social science analysis.
I recently published two edited books: Ecologies of Knowledge: Work
and Politics in Science and Technology (SUNY, 1995) and The Cultures of
Computing (Blackwell, 1995).
Looking forward to re-joining our discussion.
