My general interests are language, culture, cognition and the role of
schooling in development.
I am very interested in Vygotsky (sociocultural/sociohistorical theory)
and activity theory.
I am currently working on projects related to literacy development
in socioeducational contexts. Several colleagues, Barbara Flores, Jose
Hernandez, Pat Cousin, and myself work collaboratively on these projects.
All of our work involves working class, bilingual and minority students and
their teachers. We do a lot of work in the classrooms on a regular basis.
We call ourselves the 'Vygotsky of the Desert Discourse Group' or the
VODD group. Our aim is to examine and implement the above-mentioned theories
in classroom lessons and activities--which we call 'socioeducational
contexts'.
