I'm a professor of education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education in the University of Toronto. My appointment is split between
the Department of Curriculum, the Joint Centre for Teacher Development and
the Centre for Applied Cognitive Science. My major interests are in
understanding how language functions as a toolkit for communicating,
thinking, learning and teaching in the context of joint activity, and in
investigating ways of improving students' opportunities for learning
through classroom-based inquiries carried out collaboratively with
teachers and students. Our action research project is called Developing
Inquiring Communities in Education. In my work, I draw particularly on
the writings of Halliday in systemic linguistics as well as on those
of Bakhtin, Vygotsky, Leont'ev and contemporary sociocultural theorists.
