I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics,
University of Sydney, Australia. By training, I am a systemic functional
linguist, specialising in discourse analysis - working mainly on English
and Tagalog (Pilipino). I have been involved for some years in the
development of Australia's distinctive 'genre-based' literacy programs,
which have been designed to provide non-mainstream students with access
to mainstream discourses. For our pedagogy, we drew on Vygotsky/Bruner
(via Brian Gray) and Halliday/Painter (via Joan Rothery) - with respect
to the principle of 'guidance through interaction in the context of
shared experience'. The main influence on our education theory has been
Bernstein. Jay Lemke, who has visited us many times here drew my
attention to your group last year and as a functional linguist I have
enjoyed the many points of contact between our work and (collectively) yours.
