I am working at the Krasnoyarsk State University (Siberia, Russia) as
an associate professor and the Head of the Institute of Experimental Pedagogy.
This institute includes a few research groups and a large experimental
(laboratory) school (K-11). At the institute we are trying to develop a new
model of school education which could give a strong developmental effect.
We are trying to develop not only the so-called "developmental curriculum" but
also to understand the developmental role of the general organization of
schooling, school rituals and hidden norms. We consider schooling an important
factor for maturing. Some notion of our work one can find in the recent book
"Creating and Managing the Democratic School" (Falmer Press,1995)
My own research and practical interests are in the field of philosophy of
education and educational psychology: schooling as a rite of passage,
developmental crisis and education, development of independence and
sense of freedom in students, teachers as adults for students, students'
attitude to adulthood, critical thinking as a condition for maturing.
Professor Vasily Davydov from Psychological Institute (Moscow) was my
academic adviser when we developed the project of our school. I am still
keeping links with him and follow some of his research. Recently I have been
working closely with the group lead by Boris Elkonin (also Psychological
Institute) Classical names are Daniil Elkonin (Vygotsky's student), M.Mead.
