Yes, Eugene, I agree aboout the terror - and I tried in my previous
mail - to say exactly the same that you say, - I only made it in an
ironic way - The Great Terror (1937 - Killing the Nomenklatura) had not
started, BUT the terror was there (The killing of the peasants). That
was my point in relation to fact theat the research was a reserach on
peasants. Can you imagine - One day NKVD comes to interrogate (and
shoot) the peasants. Next day comes an Academic team from the Capital
- they say they are doing research - and they are also asking questions
- and there are some of the questions which are very much in an
"interrogation-style". (We have heard that your neighbour has said
...). What I wanted to say is that IQ-test can never (never!) be
neutral - as Freire says Pedagogy is not neutral.
And the premise - that Uzbekistan - and collective farms in Uzbekistan
- was "lower" (and Moscow higher) is also very etnocentric (and wrong).
Bohara, Samarkand and Tasjkent were once upon atime a Great culture -
and the illiterate peasants used (1930) a very advanced irrigation
system (karez). We have to observe the difference between letteracy and
literacy! (Read, S Papert - "The children's machine"). The concept of
abstract thinking in cognitivistic theory is so confusing - and the use
of such concepts in a socio-cultural-study (as The Uzbekistan study)
is very surprising - to me.
About Vygotskij's distance to the Uzbeki expedition.
In Veer-Valsiners (great) book you can read (Chapter 10) what
Vygotskij said. I think (but I do not know) that Lev Vygotskij saw the
shortcomings of the investigation (though he was polite and velcomed
it). At that time (1932) Bucharin was a leading theoretican - AND his
books (ABC on Communism and others) are based on a very mecanistic
materialistic perspective (far far away from what Marx wrote in
"German Ideology" and "Thesis on Feuerbach") and if we add what Stalin
himself wrote about Dialectical Materialism uou get a confusin mess. If
theses leading men (and their mecanistic theories) influenced the
expedition (and that's what I think) the expedition had false premises
(to uses an Aroistotelian concept). You can read what Gramsci wrote
about Bucahrin's "theory" in Gramsci's Letters from the prison.
